‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ Sets Max Premiere Date

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has been set to begin streaming on Max on August 16.

The film’s streaming debut comes following its May theatrical release, which underwhelmed at a worldwide gross of $172 million worldwide, even as the post-apocalyptic actioner drew strong reviews.

Marking the fifth installment in the Mad Max franchise from George Miller, Furiosa is a prequel to 2015’s Oscar winner Mad Max: Fury Road, which explores the backstory of Imperator Furiosa, a fierce warrior inhabited here by Anya Taylor-Joy following Charlize Theron’s depiction in the prior film.

Directed by Miller, who wrote the script with Nico Lathouris, the new film delves into the character’s early life, revealing how she was taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers and thrust into the brutal world of the Warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe. As Furiosa struggles to survive in this harsh environment, she must navigate allegiances and rivalries that shape her into the formidable leader seen in Fury Road.

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke are among the other stars of the pic, produced by Miller and Doug Mitchell, which launched out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

While speaking with journalists at Cannes, Miller teased that “there are certainly other stories there” to be told, in looking at the world of Mad Max. Still, he said, he’d have to see how Furiosa performed “before we even think about” another installment.

Miller had long planned to follow up Furiosa with Mad Max: The Wasteland, a film picking up with “Mad Max” Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) shortly before the events of Fury Road. But in a June interview with Forbes to promote Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders, Hardy said of a possible return to the franchise, “I don’t think that’s happening.”
